Frequently asked questions
Straight answers to the questions Perth business owners ask us most. Can't find yours? Ask us directly — we're happy to talk you through your obligations with no sales pressure.
How often should test and tag be completed?
It depends on the environment your equipment is used in. AS/NZS 3760 sets retest intervals based on how harsh the conditions are:
Every 3 months — construction, demolition and similar harsh environments. Every 6–12 months — factories, warehouses, workshops and commercial kitchens. Every 1–5 years — offices and other low-risk environments, depending on the equipment.
When we quote your site, we assess each area and set the correct interval — then remind you before your next retest is due.
Is test and tag a legal requirement?
Under Western Australia's work health and safety laws, every employer has a duty to ensure electrical equipment in the workplace is safe and properly maintained. Testing and tagging to AS/NZS 3760 is the recognised, practical way of demonstrating you've met that duty — and in some industries, such as construction and demolition, it's explicitly mandatory.
Just as importantly, if something goes wrong, your test records are the evidence that you took electrical safety seriously.
How long does testing take?
Most appliances take only a couple of minutes each. A typical small office is usually finished within an hour or two; larger warehouses and workshops are scheduled by appliance count so you know what to expect. We work methodically and quietly, and we don't need you to shut down the whole site to do it.
Do you test after business hours?
Yes. We regularly test outside trading hours — early mornings, evenings and weekends — for retail stores, hospitality venues, medical clinics and any workplace where daytime testing would get in the way. Just let us know what works for you when you book.
Do you provide compliance reports?
Yes — after every visit. Your digital report lists every item tested, where it is on site, its pass or fail result, and when it's next due for retest. It's the document your auditor, insurer or WorkSafe inspector will ask for, and it arrives without you having to chase it.
Which Australian Standards do you follow?
Portable appliance testing and tagging is carried out to AS/NZS 3760 (In-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment), which includes insulation resistance, earth continuity and polarity testing. Emergency and exit lighting is tested to AS/NZS 2293.2. All testing is performed with calibrated equipment.
What happens if an item fails?
It's tagged out of service immediately with a clearly marked fail tag, and it appears in your report with the reason it failed. You can then have it repaired and retested, or replace it. Nothing unsafe is left in service — that's the whole point.
Do new appliances need to be tested?
New equipment doesn't need electrical testing before first use, but it should be visually inspected and tagged with a "new to service" tag recording the date it entered service — which sets the clock for its first retest. We handle this as part of your regular visit.
